Composite Bonding for Aesthetic Enhancement
Case Presentation:
Composite Bonding for Aesthetic Enhancement and Tooth Restoration
Patient Information:
- Name: Dr Anwar
- Age: 27 years
- Gender: Male
Chief Complaint:
The patient presented with concerns about the appearance of his upper front teeth and upper left second premolar. He expressed dissatisfaction with the existing composite bonding on these teeth and requested improvement in their aesthetics. Additionally, he was concerned that his upper left second premolar appeared like a missing tooth when he smiled.
Medical and Dental History:
The patient’s medical history was unremarkable. He reported no known allergies or ongoing medical conditions. His dental history indicated that he had received composite bonding on the upper front 6 teeth approximately 4 years ago. He reported good oral hygiene practices and routine dental check-ups.
Clinical Examination:
Intraoral examination revealed composite bonding material on the upper front 6 teeth with signs of wear, discoloration, and minor chipping. The upper left second premolar exhibited reduced mesiodistal width, contributing to an unsightly gap in his smile. The rest of the oral cavity appeared healthy, with no signs of caries or periodontal disease.
Treatment Plan:
After discussing the treatment options with the patient, it was decided to proceed with composite bonding for aesthetic enhancement and tooth restoration. The treatment plan included the following steps:
- Old Composite Removal: The existing composite bonding material on the upper front 6 teeth was carefully removed using a composite removal bur to minimise damage to the underlying teeth. The teeth were then cleaned and prepared for the new composite veneers.
- Tooth Preparation: Minimal enameloplasty was performed to create a micro-retentive surface for optimal bonding of the new composite material. The upper left second premolar received slight reshaping to enhance its mesiodistal width and improve its appearance.
- Composite Bonding: The selected composite material, BLXL shade Empress Direct by Ivoclar, was used for the procedure. The composite was applied in layers and sculpted to achieve the desired shape and contour for each tooth. Shade matching was meticulously done to ensure a natural and harmonious appearance.
- Curing: Each layer of composite material was light-cured using a high-intensity LED curing light to ensure proper polymerization and bond strength.
- Finishing and Polishing: After achieving the desired shape and contour, the composite veneers were meticulously polished using fine diamond burs and polishing discs. This step aimed to achieve a smooth, glossy surface that mimics the natural appearance of teeth.
Conclusion:
The composite bonding procedure was successfully completed over a 4-hour session. The patient expressed satisfaction with the improved aesthetics of his upper front teeth and upper left second premolar. The use of BLXL shade Empress Direct by Ivoclar helped achieve natural-looking results. The patient’s compliance with post-operative care instructions and regular dental check-ups will play a pivotal role in ensuring the long-term success of the treatment.
